“Gege, I want ice cream!” Henry said running straight for Hankyung’s legs.
“More?” Hankyung asked reaching down to make sure that Henry didn’t trip them both.
“Yes more! Wookie said I can’t eat a whole truck full of ice cream. He says I’ll get sick, but I can!”
Hankyung picked Henry up. “Henry-ah, you can’t eat a truck full of ice cream. You’ll get sick.”
Henry pouted and turned to look at Heechul. “Appa, I can have ice cream right?”
“Of course you can as long as Hankyung is buying.”
“Heechul.”
“What?” Heechul asked. “You were the one who didn’t go pick him up that day. Kids have long memories and they hold grudges. You’re just lucky I’m nice and caring and made an excuse for you otherwise who knows if Henry would be talking to you right now.”
“Henry doesn’t even remember that, it was so long ago. And you know it wasn’t Han Geng’s fault.” Zhou Mi said.
“No, it was my fault.” Siwon said coming to stand next to Hankyung.
They were in Siwon’s house, in his living room to be exact. Zhou Mi and Heechul were sitting on the couch looking up at Hankyung and Henry. Siwon had an arm around Hankyung’s waist and was trying to get Henry to go with him.
“He doesn’t like you Siwon.” Heechul said. “He only likes Chinese men and me and maybe Kyuhyun.”
“Oh! I love Kyuhyun hyung!” Henry said twisting in Hankyung’s arms. “Wookie says that he can sing very well and when we get older he’s going to be in our group and we’ll hold concerts together.”
“Don’t you like me Henry?” Siwon asked resting his chin on Hankyung’s shoulder and looking at the little boy.
Henry turned to Heechul and Zhou Mi. “Am I allowed to say the truth?”
“Of course Henry.” Zhou Mi said. “You know it’s not good to lie.”
“Promise not to get angry at me.”
“I promise.” Zhou Mi said.
“Okay, but I warned you.” Henry sighed turning to Siwon. “I like Han Geng-ge better.”
***
Siwon woke up to the ringing of his cellphone. He reached over but it was just his regular alarm for work that he’d forgotten to turn off. He turned off the phone and threw it somewhere in the direction of the couch.
It was a Saturday and Hankyung was sleeping with his face in the pillow. Siwon looked at the brown hair that was slightly tousled and the relaxed look on Hankyung’s face. He reached over carefully and ran his hand down Hankyung’s cheek.
Siwon still didn’t understand it. He couldn’t understand how he had ended up with this man. He didn’t understand how he had managed to keep Hankyung. He didn’t understand how after everything that had happened, after all of that, Hankyung was still here, still real.
Sometimes it didn’t feel real though. Sometimes like today when it was Hankyung sleeping there next to him, sometimes it didn’t feel real. Sometimes he had to reach over like now and place his hand on Hankyung’s cheek. He ran his hand down that face and leaned over to place a kiss on his cheek.
Siwon watched Hankyung’s eyes flutter open. He waited patiently as Hankyung mumbled sleepily and pulled the covers over his head. Hankyung had had a long day and Siwon knew Hankyung would want to sleep. But, there was a part in him that wanted to wake him up, wanted to be the last person Hankyung saw before sleeping for real, wanted to be the first person Hankyung saw before waking in the morning.
He’d made a vow when Hankyung agreed to move in with him; he’d made a vow that he’d spend the rest of his life making sure that every day was better than the last. Hankyung had been signed in with a performance troupe and Siwon was running his father’s company. He’d come out to the public about his relationship with Hankyung and the world hadn’t exploded…although it had been close, but Heechul and Zhou Mi were there and everything had worked out in the end.
All Siwon could do now was try to make each day better.
Tonight, he had something else to do. One more thing to set aside so that he could finally have the happily ever after. He was going to see Kangin.
He knew that Hankyung would never take another step inside that club ever again, but he remembered Kangin. Kangin had listened to him, understood him and he wanted to tell Kangin something that he had learned. He wanted to tell Kangin that it was worth waiting, that he should wait, wait forever if necessary because Jungsu would come back. How Siwon knew, he wasn’t too sure, but he just felt it.
It was probably his own happiness radiating into things that had nothing to do with him. But, Hankyung was here and Hankyung was real and he would never in those past five years had thought that he would be waking up to this beautiful man every day for the rest of his life. And if he had this then why not Kangin.
He just wanted to say something, be of some help to someone.
Siwon took one more look at Hankyung, placed a kiss on that cheek and grabbed his coat from the closet. He made it halfway across the room when Hankyung spoke.
“Where are you going?”
“I have to go do something before I go to sleep.” Siwon answered turning around.
“What are you going to do? It’s late Siwon. Come back here.”
Siwon knew that he was supposed to answer. He should, but he couldn’t. He couldn’t because the window was open and the light from outside was shining on Hankyung so that half of his body was covered in a pale glow and the other in darkness. He looked even more like a dream then and Siwon had to make sure, had to walk over and make sure that this man was real, was really his.
He walked over, pulled Hankyung into his arms and breathed in the familiar scent of the other man. Real. Here. His.
“I’m going to go see Kangin.”
Hankyung said nothing.
“I want to tell him something.”
“Do you want me to come with you?”
Siwon shook his head. “You don’t want to go back. Stay here and I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
“Alright.” Hankyung said falling back down onto the bed and turning onto his stomach. “Hurry back. It gets cold here at night.”
Siwon ran his fingers through Hankyung’s hair. “I’ll be back.”
Hankyung mumbled something and Siwon knew that meant that he could leave. He practically ran to his car. The thing was the faster he got to where he was going the faster he would be back. He didn’t speed, not with Hankyung waiting for him back at home. He would never do anything stupid, nothing to jeopardize what he had. He was done being stupid.
He parked his car in the street and got out. He walked into the club and it was like a movie replaying in his head. He remembered the sixteen years old, the young boy who ran here every day after school to bring Hankyung a present, to bring him a story. He remembered that last time when he met Kangin.
He walked to the bar like he had that day.
“May I help you?” The bartender asked,
It wasn’t the same face. That wasn’t Kangin.
“I’m sorry.” Siwon said. “I’m looking for Kangin.”
“Kangin?” the bartender asked. “Who’s Kangin?”
“Kangin, he used to work here.” Siwon said wondering for a second whether he had gone to the wrong club. “He was the bartender.”
“Oh, you mean Kim YoungWoon. He doesn’t work here anymore. Left maybe a week ago.”
“Oh.” Siwon said.
He didn’t know why he was suddenly so disappointed, why he felt like he should have come earlier, like maybe he could have done something. He hadn’t thought that Kangin was the type to give up. He’d looked up to Kangin, admired him for waiting, for hoping.
“Have a good night.” Siwon said. “Thanks.”
“Wait a second.” The bartender said. “Do you…are you Siwon?”
“Yes, I am.” Siwon answered. “Why?”
“Here…YoungWoon…Kangin, he left you a letter.”
Siwon took the letter. It was plain white paper with black ink.
I don’t even know if you’ll be back here kid, but I thought I might as well leave this in case you do come back. Don’t give up kid. Don’t give up because it’s worth it. It’s always worth it. Oh and you owe me for that drink. It came out of my paycheck and I’ll be sure to charge you once I get back.
Siwon folded the letter and put it in his pocket.
“Do you know where he went?” he asked already having some idea.
“I don’t know. All I know is that Leeteuk came back and then Kangin disappeared or that’s the story around here anyway.”
Siwon laughed. “Alright, I guess I’ll be going then.”
Happiness was one of the simplest emotions known to human kind. Happiness for yourself, happiness for others, it all worked out to be the same. He was happy. He was happy as he made his way to the door, happy as he stepped outside. He watched the door close behind him as he walked to his car.
You’re not supposed to look back when you close a chapter in your life. You’re not supposed to because there is a reason why you are leaving the past behind you. There is always a reason, but there was a reason for why Siwon looked back.
LIKE VELVET.
Like velvet skin and velvet desire.
The dark purple letters glowed against the black door, almost impossible to make out, almost impossible to see. It had been designed that way so that only those who knew it was there would not miss it.
This club, it was part of his past, part of Hankyung’s.
Hankyung.
That was the reason why Siwon looked back. He looked back because he had met Hankyung there, had loved Hankyung there. It was the past, but sometimes, sometimes it is okay to keep snippets of the past.
Memories.
They were called memories.
Siwon turned around. He got into his car, pulled out his cellphone and dialed the number.
“Hello?” Hankyung’s voice answered. “I’m sorry I’m not here to answer your call—”
“If that’s what your voicemail message sounds like then change it.” Siwon said reveling in the way his heart seemed to want to squeeze out of his chest.
“You don’t like it? Then what should it say President Choi?”
Siwon laughed. “Obviously it should go something like this. Hello this is Choi Hankyung. I am madly in love with Choi Siwon—”
“Madly in love?” Hankyung said and Siwon could hear the laughter in his voice. “Who says I’m madly in love with you? If anything you’re the one who is madly in love with me.”
“Stop talking to Heechul so much.”
“Heechul-ah? But, I love Heechul-ah.”
Siwon said nothing. He listened. He loved listening. He listened to the way Hankyung laughed, the way Hankyung stopped. He listened to the silence and knew that it was a shared silence, a silence for both of them.
“What is it?” Hankyung whispered and Siwon could feel it like a touch.
“I love you.” He said.
He heard the quiet intake of breath. “I know you do.”
Siwon smiled. “Usually when someone says they love you, you’re supposed to say it back.”
“But, who says I love you?”
“I’m serious Geng, stop talking to Heechul.”
“I can’t.” Hankyung answered. “He’s my twin. We can’t live without each other. He and Zhou Mi are moving in next week. Didn’t I tell you? We’re going to have little Henry running all over the house, away from you, but still running.”
“Heechul would never move in with us. He loves his house.” Siwon answered. “And you love me too much to do that to me.”
“Okay.”
There it was again. Silence because there were more words in those moments than any other time.
“I love you.” Hankyung said finally.
“I know.”
“And, we’re going to go over to Zhou Mi and Heechul’s for dinner tomorrow.”
Siwon laughed. He waited until Hankyung hung up the phone and then he put his away. Memories. Memories made and many more to make and he had Hankyung to make them with.
