Bad Romance
Title: Bad Romance
Pairing: hanchul
Genre: fluff...idk what it is.
Rating: PG
Summary: Han Geng cringes. He's turned into a three year old. There is no bouncing back from that.
a/n: I hated this fic and then I liked it. idk either =\
Han Geng sees him on the train every night. They take the train together. The one with the red sign advertising lipstick that passes at 10:15 pm. It's Han Geng's train back home and he assumes that's where the pretty man who always takes the same seat is going. Han Geng knows this man pretty well.
He's memorized the long, red hair, the tight jeans and loose shirts. But then, that's as far as he's ever really gotten with this man. Han Geng doesn't know where he's going or who he's going home to. They're strangers.
There's something vaguely exhilarating about that.
Han Geng doesn't know this man. This man doesn't know him. This man doesn't know that he's been aching and needy for a very long time. This man doesn't know about Zhou Mi. He doesn't know the aching pain in Han Geng's heart every time he sees the way Zhou Mi leans over to whisper into Kyuhyun's ear.
Han Geng has never really known hate, but he assumes that what he felt when Kyuhyun stole Zhou Mi away was close to hate. Han Geng lived in that smile and he has to watch it every day, the way that smile lives for Kyuhyun now.
Pain from broken glass. It is like that. It will hurt every time he remembers until it scars over. And even then the memory remains; one scar among many.
The man with the red hair and the scars along his wrists and arms must know pain.
It's probably the only reason Han Geng is attracted to him. Both of them living in their silent pain. Mutual hatred for the world because that man must hate the world to do what he does to himself.
Or so, Han Geng assumes.
---
"Hello."
Simple. That's the way Han Geng starts the conversation.
"Yes?" the red haired man answers, "Do you need help with something?"
Han Geng wants to tell him that yes, he does need help. He's probably needed help the moment he fell in love with Zhou Mi. Probably even before that when he fell in love with Siwon who was already in love with Sungmin.
He settles for a simple. "I do. Why? Are you offering?"
He adds a smirk and is surprised and pleased when he gets a smirk in return.
"Not before you buy me coffee and not unless you're hiding a pretty hot body under all the clothes."
Han Geng has never considered his taste in clothes to be anything less than average. Sure he's made mistakes (Lady Gaga be damned because he is not her little brother no matter what Sungmin says), but the man on the train is not one to talk about clothes. He's done a lot of changing thanks to Zhou Mi and if there is anything wrong with his clothes then Zhou Mi is to blame.
"Listen kid," the red haired man says, "You look like crap and you probably need what I can offer, but don't do it. Go home."
Han Geng doesn't get it. His head is still wrapped around Zhou Mi and that one pair of tight leather pants.
"What exactly is it that you can offer?"
"You don't know?"
Han Geng can't say he does and that smirk on the other man's face isn't helping.
"No."
There is a pause from the red haired man. He looks annoyed and if this were a date Han Geng would fake a call and run. This isn't a date and there is no reception where they are...Geng settles for a poker face.
"What do you want?" the red haired man asks finally. "I don't need you wasting my time."
Han Geng is lost again. He doesn't know what he wants. It's rather strange. He always knows what he wants, but he just can't come up with anything. He blames his limited Korean. He always blames his Korean.
"Do you want to maybe go do something?"
He doesn't need the roll of eyes from the red haired man to know that the question is both childish and stupid. He was trying to go for something along the lines of I want you. Served warm. But...you know...better.
"You need help."
"I do not."
Han Geng cringes. He's turned into a three year old. There is no bouncing back from that and he knows that he'll never take this train again.
"Here." the red head says handing over a card. "If you want to know who I am go to that address and ask for Heechul."
"Why?"
"I honestly don't know."
Han Geng blinks. He thinks he may have just been insulted.
---
Han Geng is out with Siwon that weekend when he remembers the card Heechul gave him. He hasn't told anyone about that particular train encounter. Even he isn't sure what happened.
He's Han Geng, a Chinese dancer. He's been onstage in front of hundreds of people. He's more than used to the attention he and Siwon get from girls. He knows attention. He can handle it. So, no, he really doesn't understand why he came off sounding like he was three to the man on the train.
When he reads the card he tries to convince himself that he isn't going to see Heechul because he feels like he has to scrape his pride off the bottom of Heechul's shoes.
(Han Geng has never been a good liar).
---
It's a bookstore.
There's a sign on the front door.
This is a bookstore.
Underneath that.
We don't sell coffee. If you used a fraction of your brain you would know that.
One more under that one.
My signs are not rude. Your face is rude.
Han Geng sighs. He's never been very patient.
He walks in. There is no annoying tinkling little bell, no eager store worker asking him if he needs help. It's quiet. There are shelves lining every wall, rows of shelves all filled with books. Han Geng can't see the cash register, but he knows it's there. Every bookstore has one.
He forgets why he's there for a moment, losing himself in the quiet. He likes quiet, but it's almost impossible to find it sometimes.
"Are you looking for something or are you lost because that would be sad."
"I'm not lost."
"Oh," Heechul says when Han Geng turns, "It's Lady Gaga's little brother. You're fashion sense is a bit off today."
Han Geng stares. Heechul is wearing dark blue jeans today. His shoes are neon yellow and his shirt is pink.
"What's your name?" Heechul asks.
"Alejandro."
Han Geng likes the arch of Heechul's eyebrow.
"I'm sorry. Reflex."
It's a pathetic explanation. So pathetic that Geng is already turning to walk away when he realizes that he's sort of, kind of lost. There are many many book shelves in the store.
"Hey," he says thinking quick, "want to have some coffee? I hear they don't serve coffee in bookstores or I'd take you to this great bookstore a few streets down."
Heechul smirks and Geng writes is down in the back of his head for reference.
“It better be good coffee if I’m going to walk anywhere.”
“It’s the best coffee in Seoul.” Geng answers.
“Alright then,” Heechul says, “Let’s go.”
Han Geng motions him forward and Heechul walks off. Geng follows and thinks that yeah, it is pretty pathetic that he can’t find his way out of a bookstore, but he got a date out of it.
Somehow, even that doesn’t make him feel better.
---
The coffee is horrible. Beyond bad.
“So.” Heechul says.
Geng doesn’t know what to answer to that.
“What do you do for a living?”
“I’m a dancer.”
“So that’s why I think I’ve seen your face somewhere.” Heechul says leaning forward. “I’ve seen you on TV before. You and that other guy, the hot one. What’s his name?”
“Siwon.”
“Right Siwon. He’s hot. I wouldn’t mind showing him around my apartment.”
“He’s dating someone.” Geng says because, after all, it’s not nice to mislead.
“He won’t be once he meets me.” Heechul says.
Han Geng notices the way Heechul tilts his head away. He’s seen Heechul do it on the train when someone tries to flirt with him. It takes him a second to realize that he’s supposed to say something.
“I guess I can take you. I’ve been meaning to have a go at Sungmin.”
“Sungmin is his girlfriend?”
“Boyfriend.”
Han Geng is sure he isn’t misreading that glint in Heechul’s eyes or the suggestive smile. He can’t be misreading it.
“You like boys who like boys?”
Han Geng shakes his head. “I like you.”
He congratulates himself on his amazing, witty response and waits for Heechul to acknowledge it.
“So what exactly do you do as a dancer?”
“Just dance.”
Heechul smiles and Geng thinks that maybe he’s missing something. But, hey, with Heechul it seems like he’s always missing something and it isn’t that bad.
Not yet.
---
They’re three weeks into their relationship when Han Geng thinks to ask about the scars on Heechul’s arms. They’re on the train back to Heechul’s apartment because three weeks is definitely enough time for Geng to move in with him.
They’re sitting together molded together from ankles to shoulders. Geng’s hand is running along Heechul’s wrist. Heechul squirms and Geng sees the scars.
“What happened?” he asks.
Heechul shrugs, pushes his hair out of the way. It’s black again or so Heechul tells Geng.
“I had a bad childhood. I drank too much. I smoked too much. Take your pick. I did them all.”
Geng frowns. “Are you happy now?”
Heechul smiles. “Of course I’m happy.”
Geng nods. “Do you think you want to meet Zhou Mi and Siwon?”
“Zhou Mi is the one you never talk about.”
It’s a statement of fact. Han Geng doesn’t talk about Zhou Mi. He thinks it’s because he’s moved on. Heechul sitting next to him is proof of that. There is no need to relive the past. Han Geng doesn’t want to. He just wants Heechul to talk to him all night about the books he has read or wants to read. He wants Heechul curled up on the couch next to him while they watch TV. Heechul in the morning with his hair all over the place. He wants the way Heechul wakes up and smiles, rolling away and saying that Geng looks so much better in the morning.
Geng thinks that maybe he might be in love with Heechul.
---
“I’m dating someone.”
An explosion in the Korean embassy would have caused less commotion. No joke. Sungmin does everything but call the President. There is a party and balloons and cake and everyone passes out drunk on the couch.
Sungmin knows how to throw a party. Geng will give him that.
---
On his and Heechul’s first year anniversary Geng is seriously considering strangling Zhou Mi. He doesn’t do it because Kyuhyun is actually kind of nice and Geng doesn’t want him to be depressed over the loss of his boyfriend. Geng doesn’t kill Sungmin because Sungmin is nice and pretty and Siwon is kind of big.
Sungmin and Zhou Mi love Heechul and they’ve been trying to get Han Geng to tell them what he got Heechul for their anniversary. Geng isn’t telling. Even then it takes him three angry text messages and four phone calls to get the message across.
“Zhou Mi I said no.” Geng is saying as he walks into the apartment. “I don’t care how pretty you are. I am not going to tell you.”
He shuts the phone, finds Heechul in the living room, kisses him on the cheek and hands him the box.
“Happy whatever. What’s for dinner?”
“I don’t know. You didn’t cook yet.” Heechul says shaking the box.
Geng sighs but smiles at the careful way Heechul is peeling the paper off the box. “It wouldn’t kill you to cook once in a while.”
“Okay. Yeah. Sure. I’ll cook.”
The paper comes off. Heechul looks in the box.
“Is this your idea of romantic?” Heechul asks.
Geng rolls his eyes. “They’re perfect. You can’t say they aren’t. The one on the left is so you.”
“Yes, it is.” Heechul sniffs. “And the other one is so you. You are my groveling puppy dying for my attention.”
“I can’t be a dog. Sex doesn’t work that way.”
Heechul sighs and rolls off the couch. Geng follows him to the kitchen.
“You like them?”
Heechul shakes his head. “I seriously don’t know why I am still with you.”
Geng takes Heechul in his arms, pressing his chin on Heechul’s shoulder. He looks at the box in Heechul’s hands. The silver rings in the box wink back at him. They’re sitting on top of each other. The one on the right is his. The one on the left is Heechul’s.
“When I saw them at the store I thought they were perfect.” Geng says.
“What are we?” Heechul asks. “Some kind of music video?”
“A bad romance.” Geng nods.
“I like them.” Heechul says.
“I knew you would.”
Heechul pulls the rings out of the box and puts them on the counter.
I love you. the left one says.
I know. the right one answers.

AND! There was one day when I needed to cheer up so I decided I'm gonna rewatch SJ Full House and then I saw Hankyung and he somehow reminded me of you and that time I was learning how to edit gifs and I was bored and didn't know what to do with myself so I made this...
