When Han Geng comes to Korea, he does it because he knows it’s what he wants. He’s been away for five years, five long years. There is no super junior anymore so he’s not afraid to come back. No, SM to stop him from seeing the members. There are a few fans of his waiting for him at the airport. They walk him back to his car, wave to him, follow a short way before he turns a corner and loses them.

He knows where he would go if this were five years ago, but it’s now and he takes the rented car to the nearest hotel. He hands over the keys, goes inside and hands his suitcases over to the man who comes over to take them. He registers, smiles at the lady behind the counter and goes up to his room.

It doesn’t feel real, the Korean words around him. He thanks the man who puts his things in the room. His Korean has never been flawless but it certainly hasn’t gotten worse. He’s made sure of that.

Geng flops down on his bed, presses his face into the pillows. His phone rings an hour later and wakes him up.

“Hello?”

“Hyung?”

Han Geng sits up. “Siwon?”

“Yeah, how are you? Did you get here okay? Do you need a place to stay? Sungmin and I have room.”

“It’s nice to hear from you again Siwonnie.” Geng says. “I’m staying at a hotel right now.”

“Tell him he needs to come over here or you’re going to go get him.” Geng hears from somewhere in Siwon’s background.

“Is that Sungmin?” Geng asks.

“Yeah, he says you need to come stay with us.”

Han Geng smiles, wants to say that it’s okay. He wants to tell Siwon that he’d rather stay at the hotel. But, this is Siwon. This is Siwon who he has always had a soft spot for. This is Siwon who has always wanted to protect him, as if Geng were the one that needed protection. It has to be this Siwon.

“Alright.” Han Geng says. “I’ll come right over. What’s the address?”

Siwon rattles off the number and the street and Geng jots it down. He picks his things up, pays for his room and gets into the taxi. It’s a quiet ride, too quiet. At one point in his life Han Geng liked quiet, but that was before. After, after he wanted noise, anything to block out the silence because when it was quiet he had time to think. Too much thought; it gave way for too much pain, so he had immersed himself in work. He still worked as much as he could, anything really to keep the silence away.

Korea, coming here, was wrong. He should have stayed, but his desire to be here, to see him was too strong. It had been growing all the time he was away. He knew things had changed, but things always changed.

“Here we are.” The taxi driver says pulling up to an expensive looking building.

“How much?” Han Geng asks.

The taxi driver looks back at him over the seat. “Hey, aren’t you Han Geng?”

Han Geng looks at him. The taxi driver’s eyes are dark brown, so dark they could probably be called black. Once in his life, Han Geng used to love dark eyes, back when he knew nothing, when it was nicer, calmer, safer. He used to love looking into a specific set of dark eyes, eyes that would look back into his.

But, that was back then.

“No,” Han Geng says, “I’m not him. What would Han Geng be doing in Korea?”

The taxi driver frowns but doesn’t argue anymore. Han Geng pays him. It’s true, he knows it. Han Geng would never come back to Korea, not yet, not so soon. He wouldn’t come back now that Super Junior was over and his career was sky rocketing. It would be like rubbing it in their faces, the members who were once his brothers.

That’s why he shouldn’t be here. But, these members; they were no longer his brothers.

Han Geng pays the taxi driver and gets out. He pulls out his suitcases from the back of the car and lines them on the street. All he has to do is walk in, say Siwon’s name and he’ll be there, in front of one of the closest people to him…or a version of him.

Time changes people. Five years may seem like nothing, but Han Geng knows that in five years Siwon could have changed an infinite amount of times, as many as it would take to strap him to a hospital bed. For all he knows the Siwon in this apartment isn’t the same one he used to talk to. For all he knows, they could all be different. Every one of them.

“Hyung.”

Han Geng smiles at the voice anyway. If he doesn’t look up, that sounds exactly like Siwon.

“Hyung, what are you doing just standing there?”

Han Geng looks up. He sounds so innocent, this Siwon, just like his Siwon. He’s there, big eyes looking at Han Geng with a mixture of confusion and utter happiness. It’s the happiness that wins Geng over, that makes him want to risk this. He steps forward, straight into Siwon’s open arms.

It’s perfect. Siwon’s arms come around him, pulling him in and it’s like that space on Siwon’s shoulder has been carved for him. It’s like he belongs there, fitting right in the crook of Siwon’s shoulder. Geng takes a deep breath, losing himself for a moment in this this. It’s timeless.

Siwon is still real, still the same, unchanged. In his embrace Han Geng remembers it all. The way it was before: Heechul’s dark eyes mixed with something as he and Han Geng come together. He can see Zhou Mi’s smiling face as they sit and talk. He can see Kyuhyun leaning against Zhou Mi in a silent declaration for attention. He sees Donghae, quiet, withdrawn at the news that Kibum isn’t coming back. Leeteuk, quieter than usual, eyes misting over when they tell him that Kangin ran away. He can see them all, the boys they were, the friends.

With Siwon here, he can remember and it doesn’t hurt as much as he thinks it should, because this is Siwon. He and Siwon, the only one of them who is as real as he was the day he was born. Only Siwon, because there was nothing wrong with Siwon. He’s perfect.

“Don’t you think that was long enough already? I might start to get jealous.”

Siwon moves first because Han Geng doesn’t want to.

“Hyung,” Siwon says turning to wipe the tears on the corner of his eyes, “Sungmin and I are living together.”

Han Geng nods. He’s afraid to look at Sungmin. He can hear it in Sungmin’s voice: the difference.

“Is something wrong hyung?” Siwon asks.

“No.” Han Geng says even though he can feel the lump at the back of his throat.

He looks up, the corner of his eyes burning as he looks at Sungmin. There’s the way Sungmin’s nose is shaped, just a tiny bit pointier, the cheekbones more pronounced, skin shades lighter. Sungmin is so pretty, his eyes darker, wider. It’s always the eyes that give them away, the eyes that gave Heechul away.

The differences are small. Han Geng notices them because he’s always been good at that. He’s surprised that Siwon hasn’t noticed, but he understands. Siwon and Sungmin were never a match, not in Han Geng’s mind, not in anyone’s. Geng always expected Siwon to end up with a pretty girl because the Sungmin Geng knew wasn’t Siwon’s type.

This Sungmin is.

This Sungmin has a pretty face, a pretty smile, nice full lips that just say “kiss me.” This Sungmin is small; tiny next to Siwon. They look perfect together, the perfect complement to each other. Han Geng doesn’t know if he’s happy or not. He doesn’t know if he should be.

“It’s nice to see you again hyung.” Sungmin says.

Han Geng manages a nod and then he’s turning away too. Both of them, Siwon and Sungmin. He doesn’t know what makes him sadder: the way Siwon looks at Sungmin or the way Sungmin looks at Siwon. Both looks are the same but Han Geng knows that at one point in his time Sungmin didn’t love Siwon. He knows what Siwon doesn’t.

Both so innocent.

“Let’s go inside.” Siwon says picking up the nearest suitcase. “You can have some coffee. Sungmin just made some.”

They go inside. It’s a pretty apartment, everything matches and Han Geng knows it’s not only Sungmin’s doing. He can see where Siwon had a hand in the decorations. He knows Siwon the best because Siwon has never changed. Siwon is the only one who Han Geng could ever count on. He’s glad to know that it’s still true now, even after everything.

“How is everyone?” Han Geng asks.

They’re sitting in Siwon and Sungmin’s living room. Siwon is sitting next to Sungmin, one hand resting on Sungmin’s knee, the other wrapped around his own cup of coffee. Sungmin looks calm, eyes focused on Han Geng’s as he leans into Siwon.

Han Geng is not looking at either of them. He’s focused on his cup of coffee, pale brown because of the milk. Funny how one cup of coffee can bring back so many memories. So many other cups of coffees shared with so many different people.

“What happened to them all?”

There is no answer and Geng looks up. Siwon is looking at him the way he always looks at him; like he doesn’t want to lie, but at the same time he doesn’t want to say the truth. Sungmin meets his eyes. Sungmin doesn’t care for him, not this Sungmin and Han Geng knows that if he wants answers Sungmin will give them to him.

“Where’s Henry?”

Sungmin smiles and so does Siwon. It’s a relief, a relief so strong that Geng has to take a drink from his cup to push down the lump in his throat.

“He’s in Australia right now. Preforming.” Sungmin says. “Amber’s with him. They live in California normally, not married.”

“Yet.” Siwon adds. “You would be so proud of him hyung. He changed a lot from when we were together.”

“He’s amazing.” Sungmin says. “We’ve heard him play.”

“Him and Amber?” Han Geng asks. “I thought he only saw her as his sister.”

Sungmin laughs.

“He just came to his senses one day. Amber is an amazing girl.”

Han Geng nods. One day. That’s how it always is. Just one day they change.

“Yesung is married.” Siwon says.

Geng is not surprised. He’s not surprised to hear that Ryeowook is engaged. He knows the story of those two. He lived their story. They used to love each other, pure and innocent. Ryeowook and Yesung until their love got in the way of how things were supposed to run. Anything that got in the way was discarded.

“Are they happy?” Geng asks.

For a moment there is a flicker of something in Sungmin’s eyes. It’s only a moment and then he’s smiling again, nodding along, telling Geng about the little baby Yesung on the way. They’ll name him after Ryeowook because Ryeowook is going to be the godfather.

“Yewook.” Sungmin says. “I think the fans really got to them with that one. But, it’s a fitting name.”

“The baby will be talented.” Siwon goes on. “His mother is a beautiful singer too.”

Shindong is married. Leeteuk has two kids. They never found Kangin. Eunhyuk is still doing dance with another group.

“Zhou Mi and Kyuhyun?” Siwon asks. “We haven’t heard from them since they moved to China. How are they?”

“Zhou Mi is a composer. Kyuhyun sings his songs. They’re happy.”

At least these two are. The last two.

Han Geng knows they’re getting closer. Only two more, but he needs to know.

“Kibum?” Han Geng asks. “And Donghae?”

Sungmin looks away and Han Geng has to remind himself that they feel too. All of them feel, no matter who made them or when they were made. They feel. He lived his life with Super Junior proving that they felt.

He’s reaching a hand out before he knows it, taking Sungmin’s. He doesn’t miss the flash of surprise. Siwon’s hand joins theirs a few seconds later. The three of them, together. Friends. Family.

“Donghae went to look for him.” Sungmin says. “As soon as he was free to do so, he went to look for him. He started in California, went through every state. He didn’t sleep for days, afraid that he’d miss Kibum when he slept.”

“He was a mess.” Siwon continues. “He’d call, half crazy. He wanted to know if there was news. There never was. We lost him hyung. We lost the way he used to smile, the innocence in his eyes. It was gone. He wanted Kibum. It killed Eunhyuk.”

“It did in the beginning.” Sungmin nods.

“Until one day it didn’t?” Geng says.

“He got over it.” Siwon says setting down his cup of coffee. “He moved on. Donghae couldn’t.”

“Did they ever find each other?”

Geng needs to know the answer. He needs to know because he knew Kibum, better than some of them did. He knew that Kibum couldn’t understand. Kibum ran.

“Donghae found him three days before you came hyung.” Siwon smiles.

“It was the first time we heard from Kibum in a long time.” Sungmin adds. “They sounded so happy.”

“That’s good.”

They’re quiet for a minute. Han Geng can hear the question. It comes from Sungmin.

“Why are you here hyung?”

“It’s him.” Siwon says. “It’s him isn’t it?”

Han Geng looks up. His smile is sad. He knows it.

“Of course it’s him.” Han Geng says. “It’s always been him. Heechul.”
