Title: Of Friendships and Relationships
Pairing: JongKey ninja!Onew/Minho
Genre: slight angst, fluff

Summary: Key lets Jonghyun be his friend because Key doesn't mind Jonghyun, but he should have known that things that start off as friendship don't always stay that way. (a one shot about the development of the JongKey relationship)
A/N: I am expanding! \o/ *is proud of self* So there I was walking to class like a normal person would on any other normal day and then as I was walking these sentences started forming in my head and then before I knew it I was making up a fic on the spot. And the funny thing was it was Jonghyun and Key from Shinee who were in this fic and so of course I ran to class, pulled out the lap top and started typing frantically. Then, my professor came in and interrupted my life and I had to stop the fic, but I was amazed that I was actually writing JongKey which is my OTP from Shinee. So, without further ado I present to you my first Shinee fic =) Enjoy
It starts as friendship as all things do. They know each other because they’re under the same record label and because they’ve had to train their butts off to get into the group. Jonghyun is Key’s first friend because, well, to be frank, Key has a thing when it comes to people who are allowed to be his friends. He’s not conceited per se, although it comes close to that, but he just likes to have certain types of friends.
Jonghyun is allowed to be his friend because Jonghyun is funny and good looking and those are always plusses in Key’s book Again, this is not because Key is conceited because he isn’t, but it’s not his fault Jonghyun is good looking.
There are certain things that Key doesn’t like about Jonghyun though. They argue, because they have to argue, living in a dorm, with people as different as the five of them. Still, Jonghyun is the one that Key argues with the most. Whether this is because Jonghyun is also the one that knows him the best, he isn’t sure. It might also be that the others are just too afraid of diva Key. Taemin will never argue with him because Key owns Taemin. Minho is a bit distant in the beginning with his deep voice and just overall imposing figure. Onew, well, Onew is their leader but could there be a less intimidating person in the world? Onew is Onew and he wouldn’t scare a fly much less argue with Key.
It’s just Jonghyun that will talk back and put up a fight, just Jonghyun that gets under his skin sometimes and makes Key want to strangle him. It’s just Jonghyun and that should have been a warning.

Their first real show on TV is Hello Baby. By this point all of them have gotten so used to each other that it’s not even the slightest bit weird that Jonghyun loves to touch everyone and that means everyone, especially Key. It’s not weird that they call each other cheesy things like honey or sweetheart and it is more than normal that they are always paired off because they know how this thing works.
Fan Service. It’s natural. They expect it. They know. They know because they have hyungs who have been doing this longer than they have and they know that it’s okay to show your affection for the other members in public because affection means happy fans.
So, of course it’s not weird in the slightest that when they’re filming their “play” Key and Jonghyun are coupled off together. It’s normal because this is what Key has dubbed as normal. He was the one who let Jonghyun in and he was the one who didn’t say anything when Jonghyun got clingy in public. Heck, he said nothing when they started wearing the same things at the same time so he has no right to complain.
And he doesn’t. He’s actually having fun with this show because he wasn’t lying when he said he loved kids. He loves Yoogeun who looks too much like Minho for that to be a coincidence and Key is going to have to question Minho later. Of course Yoogeun loves him because, duh, he’s Key, never mind Minho.
Everything seems okay on the outside, but there is a problem, something that Key hadn’t foreseen and has no one to blame for but himself. The problem is that even though he plays cool and aloof, there is a huge problem. Key sort of, kind of, might, but not really, like Jonghyun.
He phrases it that way in his head because if he knew for certain that Jonghyun didn't liked girls then he’d have no problem going up to Jonghyun and telling him this in his face. The problem is he’s not sure whether or not Jonghyun likes girls. There is always a possibility that Jonghyun can like men because Key has been talking to his hyungs.
He knows about Hankyung and Heechul and Donghae and Eunhyuk and even Kangin who he would have never marked that way, seems to be pretty happy with Leeteuk.
“It’s the proximity. The closeness. You don’t think it means much in the beginning, but it gets to you. Spending time with them, touching them, fan service or not, it gets to you. It becomes real, sometimes too real and then you get us.”
That’s what Leeteuk told him and so Key doesn’t despair. There is a still a chance that maybe Jonghyun will come to his senses. In the meantime he can wait and enjoy this show. Key finds no problem with anything until Jonghyun’s birthday. They’re all laughing and at first everything is okay, but then Jonghyun gets touchy.
Normally this would not be a problem, but Onew has been talking and the things he has said have started getting to Key. Onew doesn’t make it a secret that he might like certain members and if the way he leans and looks at Minho when the cameras have stopped rolling is anything to judge by, then Onew isn’t afraid to say that he likes guys. He’s even called Key pretty and has mentioned how it’s a shame that Jonghyun doesn’t realize what he’s missing.
Onew doesn’t mean anything by it. He says it in that leader way, the way that makes you feel like your dad is talking to you or your mother and they’re lamenting that you have no life. But, it gets to Key anyway because Onew is right. He is the Almighty Key and no one, no one, not even Jonghyun is allowed to ignore him.
He doesn’t like it anymore, at least not today because he worked so hard to help make sure that this party for Jonghyun was perfect and he gets nothing in return. He is not happy. He is not happy and Jonghyun notices because he is being extra ridiculous and it’s getting on Key’s nerves.
“You know you’re supposed to get three things for your birthday.” Jonghyun says. “Flowers, perfume and…”
He breaks off and then he’s holding Key’s face and giving him that look that is supposed to be amused, but just serves to irritate Key all the more. He doesn’t like this and he is not happy because what he wants at the moment is for Jonghyun to close the distance between them and get this over with so that Key can sleep in peace.
“Honey” Key says, and his smile is as happy as he is.
He wants nothing more than to punch Jonghyun in the face because it was bad enough that Key couldn’t get him out of his head, but did Jonghyun really have to do this. It was like he just knew how sexy he was with that grin on his face. It was like he knew and Key wanted to punch him for that because he was a sucker for that handsome face.
Jonghyun gives him this sleazy smile that says I know what you want and Key isn’t sure if he’s angry or creeped out. He leans for creeped out because if he didn’t he might have kissed Jonghyun then and there. God knows he’s been wanting to for a very long time and Jonghyun isn’t helping especially not with all that new muscle that he’s gained.
And that jawline. Key remembers someone in some show talking about Jonghyun’s jawline, but then, everyone talks about Jonghyun’s jawline. But, that’s not the point. The point is that he’s irritated and not even Onew being a dork or Yoogeun and Jonghyun acting cute can calm him down.

The reason he leans for Onew and babying Taemin is because he is tired of Jonghyun doing exactly what he wants and not at the same time. Sure, Jonghyun hugs him, puts an arm around him, gives him these looks, sure he does all that, but it’s all public. It’s never where it matters, never when they’re lying down both awake and talking. It’s never then when they’re lying next to each other, never when Key thinks it will matter the most.
So, he has every right to fool around with Onew. He has every right to joke with him, roll around on the floor while they play. He has every right to do what he does even if the director cuts it all out later. He does it and it’s worth it when later Jonghyun won’t let Onew play Key’s “husband” in their impromptu play.
“You can be Onew’s mistress and I’ll be your husband.” Jonghyun says before the cameras start rolling again. “The husband is who matters the most in the end.”
It’s things like that that drive Key insane. What is it all supposed to mean? Words like those, tossed out so carelessly, words like those are what make him want to punch Jonghyun most of the time.

Key thinks there might actually be something there between him and Jonghyun because it’s pretty hard not to think that with the way he acts all the time and Key can’t blame him if there is something because, hello, it’s Key. So, he’s gotten this idea in his head that maybe he should tell Jonghyun that it’s time to come out of the closet baby, because, well, someone has to.
Those touches sometimes get too comfortable to be just innocent touches between friends and Jonghyun has gotten into the habit of touching Key, not just in public, but all the time. And if that isn’t enough to spark some confusion, then that peck on the cheek after they won their award is definitely something. That time there were no cameras. It was just Jonghyun leaning over and kissing Key, just like that. Key decides that he is going do something about this.
But, then they find out about The Girlfriend. Key will forever refer to her as The Girlfriend because that is what she is and he just doesn’t know what to make of her. Sure, they all know her and she’s sweet and Jonghyun won’t keep his mouth shut about her, so it’s not surprising that he’s chosen her as his girlfriend. But, what is surprising though is that Jonghyun is dating her and once it becomes public, once Shinee and the whole world knows, he stops touching Key.
There is less fan service and more somber Jonghyun. Key doesn’t realize that he was so used to Jonghyun until suddenly Jonghyun is there but not really there. There is no more friendly pecks on the cheek, no more hugs, no more muscular arms around his shoulders.
It’s strange and Key needs to talk to Jonghyun about it because they’re friends and friends can talk about these things. And that’s how Key finds himself flopping, and by flopping he means sitting down gracefully, on the couch next to the stony faced Jonghyun.
“What got into your pants today that has you so angry?” Key asks and then because they’re friends. “Is she giving you trouble?”
“She has a name.” Jonghyun grounds out.
“Woah there.” Key says raising an eyebrow delicately. “No one said she didn’t. And no one is attacking you so calm down and talk. What’s wrong? What did she do?”
“Nothing.” Jonghyun says. “Nothing, she’s perfect. Shin Sekyeong is perfect. She’s pretty and nice and I like her and she’s nothing like you at all. She actually listens to what I say and doesn’t blow me off like I’m stupid. And she doesn’t complain about my height. As if that made me any less of a man.”
Key is pretty surprised at the outburst because it sounds to him like Jonghyun is trying to convince himself more than Key. Key doesn’t know what to make of the comparison because honestly, he is not like The Girlfriend because she’s a girl and he isn’t and he doesn’t want to be like her anyway. He’s Key and that’s who he wants to be. And because Key just never keeps things in he tells Jonghyun exactly what he’s thinking and that doesn’t end well.
“Well, you should be more like her. Maybe I’d like you better if you were like her. Maybe I would be less confused if you were more like her.”
And before Key can even begin to process what that’s supposed to mean Jonghyun has gotten up and left, just like that. But, that’s okay because Key can work this out. He is much more perceptive than regular guys when it comes to things like this and it seems to him like a certain muscular, brown haired Shinee member is confused about his sexuality.
Key can work with that.

“If the rest of Shinee were girls who would you date?”
They’re in one of their fan meetings and Key is sitting next to Jonghyun like always. When he hears the question though, he turns away to raise an eyebrow at the poor fan girl. He’s heard this question before and he thinks that fans need to become more original. Not everything is about fan service, but if he must suffer through Onew picking Minho again then he has to.
But, of course the fan girl doesn’t pick Onew. She picks Jonghyun and then Key is interested. He hasn’t heard Jonghyun’s answer to this question before and whereas before he would have been sure that Jonghyun would pick him, now he doesn’t know. He doesn’t know because Jonghyun has been very distant since he started dating The Girlfriend.
“I would pick Key of course.” Jonghyun answers and there is not even a second’s hesitation. “Key is pretty and smart.”
It blows Key away because he wasn’t expecting an answer that fast and he wasn’t expecting that sort of confidence from Jonghyun either. He’s so surprised in fact that he has to ask for a minute and they take a break. He knows he won’t be able to concentrate on anything unless he asks Jonghyun what he meant. Later, he’d do that later. Right now he just had to go and calm down first.
“Hey Key.”
“What do you want?” Key asks turning because obviously that is Jonghyun and of course it’s just the two of them in this backstage hallway.
“Why did you run away? I had to talk to you.”
“About what? You haven’t talked to me in a while so I don’t know what you want to talk about now.”
Key knows he’s being petty, but who cares. He’s Key and he’s allowed this because Jonghyun is a jerk.
“I meant what I said.” Jonghyun says.
Key gives him three seconds to take it back. When Jonghyun doesn’t, he gets angry. What right does Jonghyun have to come and mess with his head? It isn’t fair and he isn’t going to stand for it. This is reason enough for Key to get angry so he does.
“You’re a stupid, short idiot and no one likes your singing and you should just—”
But, Key never gets to finish his sentence because the stupid, short idiot is currently kissing him and he has no intention of pushing away this stupid, short idiot because Key sort of likes kissing Jonghyun…in public…
“Yah! What are you doing?” Key snaps shoving Jonghyun away and looking around as he wipes his mouth to make sure that no one saw them. “We’re in the middle of filming a show!”
“Key.” Jonghyun murmurs and there’s that vein working at the side of his neck again.
The same vein that always jumps when Jonghyun is singing a drawn out note or when he’s nervous. Of course the only reason Key knows this is because of that one time in that show where this one person happened to mention it. It’s not because he’s been paying attention and it certainly isn’t because he’s caught himself staring at Jonghyun more than once.
“Key.” Jonghyun repeats and Key has remind himself that he’s angry because that voice whether it’s singing or talking has always managed to get to him.
“What?” Key asks rather nastily because he’s sick and tired of Jonghyun ignoring him and then kissing him. What is that even supposed to mean?
“Key, I think I might like you…a lot.” Jonghyun says and there is that vein working on his neck again.
“Oh that’s rich.” Key snaps because it is hilariously funny that Jonghyun, who has a girlfriend mind you, might like him.
“No Key. It’s true and kind of weird but I talked to the hyungs about it and they say it’s normal. It’s just so weird because you’re my best friend and it’s like I woke up one day and realized that you were there."
“Too bad you have a girlfriend.” Key answers drily.
“I don’t have a girlfriend!” Jonghyun suddenly burst out.
“Excuse me?”
“I don’t! I don’t have a girlfriend Key.” Jonghyun repeats sounding happier than Key has heard him in days, weeks, months maybe.
Key doesn’t know what to make of this suddenly bubbly Jonghyun. He’s used to the somber, quiet-to-the-point-where-he’s-almost-ignoring-them Jonghyun and frankly this happy one is a bit scary. But, Key doesn’t have to worry about that because suddenly Jonghyun is hugging him and pressing kisses all over him and Key is pretty sure that a few land on his lips and his face, his perfectly made up face. At that he’s pushing Jonghyun away.
“Yah! What are you doing? I am not going to sit in that room and have the make-up noonas fix my face again just because you decided that you wanted to spit all over me.”
Jonghyun blinks and then he’s laughing and Key doesn’t loosen up on the glare but he is happy to hear that laugh again.
“Spit?” Jonghyun manages to ask as he laughs it up.
“Yes, spit.” Key huffs. “You’re not a dog are you? Otherwise I would have called those kisses, but those weren’t kisses and the closest thing that comes to mind is spit. So, you were spitting on me and it was disgusting.”
“Key.” Jonghyun says not the least bit offended. “Key, I love you okay.”
“Moron.” Key answers rolling his eyes, but when he turns to go back to the stage he’s smiling again and that night he lets Jonghyun wrap him in his arms and he lets Jonghyun bury his face in his neck and it’s okay because Key thinks that maybe he loves Jonghyun too.

“Well, you should be more like her. Maybe I’d like you better if you were like her. Maybe I would be less confused if you were more like her.”
And before Key can even begin to process what that’s supposed to mean Jonghyun has gotten up and left, just like that. But, that’s okay because Key can work this out. He is much more perceptive than regular guys when it comes to things like this and it seems to him like a certain muscular, brown haired Shinee member is confused about his sexuality.
Key can work with that.

“If the rest of Shinee were girls who would you date?”
They’re in one of their fan meetings and Key is sitting next to Jonghyun like always. When he hears the question though, he turns away to raise an eyebrow at the poor fan girl. He’s heard this question before and he thinks that fans need to become more original. Not everything is about fan service, but if he must suffer through Onew picking Minho again then he has to.
But, of course the fan girl doesn’t pick Onew. She picks Jonghyun and then Key is interested. He hasn’t heard Jonghyun’s answer to this question before and whereas before he would have been sure that Jonghyun would pick him, now he doesn’t know. He doesn’t know because Jonghyun has been very distant since he started dating The Girlfriend.
“I would pick Key of course.” Jonghyun answers and there is not even a second’s hesitation. “Key is pretty and smart.”
It blows Key away because he wasn’t expecting an answer that fast and he wasn’t expecting that sort of confidence from Jonghyun either. He’s so surprised in fact that he has to ask for a minute and they take a break. He knows he won’t be able to concentrate on anything unless he asks Jonghyun what he meant. Later, he’d do that later. Right now he just had to go and calm down first.
“Hey Key.”
“What do you want?” Key asks turning because obviously that is Jonghyun and of course it’s just the two of them in this backstage hallway.
“Why did you run away? I had to talk to you.”
“About what? You haven’t talked to me in a while so I don’t know what you want to talk about now.”
Key knows he’s being petty, but who cares. He’s Key and he’s allowed this because Jonghyun is a jerk.
“I meant what I said.” Jonghyun says.
Key gives him three seconds to take it back. When Jonghyun doesn’t, he gets angry. What right does Jonghyun have to come and mess with his head? It isn’t fair and he isn’t going to stand for it. This is reason enough for Key to get angry so he does.
“You’re a stupid, short idiot and no one likes your singing and you should just—”
But, Key never gets to finish his sentence because the stupid, short idiot is currently kissing him and he has no intention of pushing away this stupid, short idiot because Key sort of likes kissing Jonghyun…in public…
“Yah! What are you doing?” Key snaps shoving Jonghyun away and looking around as he wipes his mouth to make sure that no one saw them. “We’re in the middle of filming a show!”
“Key.” Jonghyun murmurs and there’s that vein working at the side of his neck again.
The same vein that always jumps when Jonghyun is singing a drawn out note or when he’s nervous. Of course the only reason Key knows this is because of that one time in that show where this one person happened to mention it. It’s not because he’s been paying attention and it certainly isn’t because he’s caught himself staring at Jonghyun more than once.
“Key.” Jonghyun repeats and Key has remind himself that he’s angry because that voice whether it’s singing or talking has always managed to get to him.
“What?” Key asks rather nastily because he’s sick and tired of Jonghyun ignoring him and then kissing him. What is that even supposed to mean?
“Key, I think I might like you…a lot.” Jonghyun says and there is that vein working on his neck again.
“Oh that’s rich.” Key snaps because it is hilariously funny that Jonghyun, who has a girlfriend mind you, might like him.
“No Key. It’s true and kind of weird but I talked to the hyungs about it and they say it’s normal. It’s just so weird because you’re my best friend and it’s like I woke up one day and realized that you were there."
“Too bad you have a girlfriend.” Key answers drily.
“I don’t have a girlfriend!” Jonghyun suddenly burst out.
“Excuse me?”
“I don’t! I don’t have a girlfriend Key.” Jonghyun repeats sounding happier than Key has heard him in days, weeks, months maybe.
Key doesn’t know what to make of this suddenly bubbly Jonghyun. He’s used to the somber, quiet-to-the-point-where-he’s-almost-ignoring-them Jonghyun and frankly this happy one is a bit scary. But, Key doesn’t have to worry about that because suddenly Jonghyun is hugging him and pressing kisses all over him and Key is pretty sure that a few land on his lips and his face, his perfectly made up face. At that he’s pushing Jonghyun away.
“Yah! What are you doing? I am not going to sit in that room and have the make-up noonas fix my face again just because you decided that you wanted to spit all over me.”
Jonghyun blinks and then he’s laughing and Key doesn’t loosen up on the glare but he is happy to hear that laugh again.
“Spit?” Jonghyun manages to ask as he laughs it up.
“Yes, spit.” Key huffs. “You’re not a dog are you? Otherwise I would have called those kisses, but those weren’t kisses and the closest thing that comes to mind is spit. So, you were spitting on me and it was disgusting.”
“Key.” Jonghyun says not the least bit offended. “Key, I love you okay.”
“Moron.” Key answers rolling his eyes, but when he turns to go back to the stage he’s smiling again and that night he lets Jonghyun wrap him in his arms and he lets Jonghyun bury his face in his neck and it’s okay because Key thinks that maybe he loves Jonghyun too.
