Kyuhyun couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Sungmin wanted to break up with him. He looked up in time to see Sungmin heading for the door.
“Sungmin, wait! Sungmin, that’s not what I meant.”
He got up and ran after Sungmin, but he lost him when Sungmin turned the corner. Kyuhyun cursed his inability to run without fracturing a lung. He sat down on the staircase and sulked.
He had told Sungmin what happened because he thought Sungmin would help. He thought Sungmin would be able to ease some of the guilt he was feeling. He had promised Zhou Mi that he would wait and he had broken his promise. He had fallen in love with Sungmin. He wanted no one else, but Sungmin.
And, he had been guilty because Zhou Mi had never done anything wrong. Zhou Mi was always there, always caring and Kyuhyun had let him go. He had let him go because Sungmin had found his way into his heart.
Kyuhyun loved Sungmin. He didn’t want Sungmin to go away. He didn’t want Sungmin to let him go.
“Min, you idiot.”
“Talking to yourself Kui Xian? I thought you stopped doing that when we were dating.”
Kyuhyun didn’t even flinch. It figured that Zhou Mi would find him when he needed help. It figured that Zhou Mi would sit next to him and put an arm around his shoulder like before. It figured that Zhou Mi would lean in and that he would remember that familiar scent.
“Hello Zhou Mi.” he said his voice dead.
“You’re not happy to see me.”
Kyuhyun sighed. He looked at Zhou Mi carefully. His heart gave an unpleasant thump as he realized just how long it had been since he had last seen Zhou Mi.
“You look good.” He said. “You finally let go of the red.”
“I did.” Zhou Mi smiled. “Someone kept telling me they liked my hair better dark.”
Kyuhyun nodded. “It suits you.”
There was a silence that Kyuhyun didn’t want to break. He didn’t want to talk about the inevitable. He just wanted to sit there and feel sorry for himself.
“Want to tell me why you ran away?” Zhou Mi asked.
“No.”
“Want to tell me about your boyfriend?”
“No.”
“Want to tell me how you moved on?”
“No.” Kyuhyun said finally turning.
He knew there were tears in his eyes and he didn’t care. Zhou Mi had always been there. He knew that Zhou Mi would comfort him now like before and he wanted comfort. Sungmin was such an idiot.
He sighed and the tears went away as Zhou Mi hugged him.
“Want me to make it better?” Zhou Mi asked in that playful tone that Kyuhyun loved.
“No.”
“Can I ask why you’re upset?”
“No. Now shut up.”
Zhou Mi listened and Kyuhyun leaned into him. He was so tired. He liked where he was. It was comfortable. It was nice. It was familiar. He frowned. It was different. It wasn’t the same as having Sungmin hold him.
Kyuhyun pulled away and frowned up at Zhou Mi. He watched Zhou Mi as he carefully bent down so that they were too close for friendly conversation. Kyuhyun wasn’t paying attention. He was still trying to figure out how to break the news to Zhou Mi when a pair of warm lips fell on his.
He fell into the kiss only because it was familiar like the hug. But, again it was different. It wasn’t the same. He didn’t feel his heart race. He didn’t feel the shivers that ran up and down his spine whenever Sungmin touched him. He didn’t feel the same heat, the same desire burning through him.
“Mi, I’m sorry.” He said pulling away. “I can’t do this. It’s—“
“It’s Sungmin.”
Kyuhyun nodded.
“I can’t say I’m surprised. He seems like your type. I was always more best friend material anyway. I just wanted to make sure before I let you go that was all. No guilt here Kui Xian. I let you go and you let me go.” Zhou Mi said offering his smile.
“I really don’t deserve you anyway. I’m such a brat. And now, I made Sungmin think that I wanted to get back with you. He ran off who knows where. He’s upset and I can’t make it better.”
“Then go find him. I need to talk to Hankyung.”
“Hankyung hyung? How do you know him?”
Zhou Mi laughed. “Everyone knows Han Geng-ge. Our parents are best friends. I’ve been keeping in contact with him ever since he left China. And since he makes everything here sound so great, I came to see for myself what was so great about Korea.”
“I’m what’s great about Korea.” Kyuhyun said getting up.
“Yes, of course.” Zhou Mi said leading the way down the stairs.
They walked together and it was nice to talk to Zhou Mi again. It was nice to have a friend who knew him well. He guessed that’s what Yesung and Hankyung had except his relationship with Zhou Mi had been more innocent. They’d rarely even shared kisses. They were both so young back then, so innocent. It was a relationship made between two clumsy teenagers who wanted to love.
And now they were older, grown up. They knew what they wanted from life now and things had to change to accommodate that.
“And we can even practice together if you want.”
“That would be great hyung.”
Kyuhyun recognized Sungmin’s voice, but he didn’t recognize the second one. He reached forward to stop Zhou Mi and waited. When Sungmin turned the corner the first thing Kyuhyun saw was the hand that Sungmin had on someone else’s shoulder.
Then, he noticed the someone else. The boy, because he had to be a boy, was just a boy. There was nothing special in Kyuhyun’s point of view. He didn’t understand the look in Zhou Mi’s eyes. He didn’t know why Zhou Mi was suddenly a flailing mess as he ran over to coo at the someone else Sungmin was hanging off of.
“Oh aren’t you just so cute?” Zhou Mi said effectively embarrassing Kyuhyun. “What’s your name? I’m Zhou Mi.”
“I’m Henry.” Henry said turning bright pink at the attention. “Nice to meet you.”
“Henry?” Kyuhyun asked not bothering to hide the contempt.
It wasn’t that he disliked Henry because he didn’t know enough to dislike the other man. It was just that Sungmin was touching him and Kyuhyun didn’t want Sungmin touching anyone or anyone touching Sungmin for that matter.
“Yes, Henry.” Sungmin answered immediately defensive. “He’s from Canada. He speaks English exceptionally well and Korean and Mandarin and Cantonese.”
“Hmph.” Kyuhyun said turning away. “Like you need English here. And everyone speaks Mandarin.”
“Oh yeah?” Sungmin asked. “Do you speak it?”
“Of course, I do.”
“Prove it.”
Kyuhyun rolled his eyes, but switched over to Mandarin. He made sure to look straight at Sungmin when he spoke so that there was no mistake as to who he was talking to.
“I love you. You are so stupid. I can’t believe you would walk out on me when I was going to profess my undying love to you. Now, you have to do it. I’m not forgiving you until you do.”
He saw Zhou Mi’s smirk and decided to ignore it. He focused instead on Henry’s face. He laughed out loud at the completely shocked expression on Henry’s face.
“Who are you confessing your love to Kyuhyun?”
Kyuhyun turned to glare at Hankyung. There went his plan to keep it a secret.
“What do you mean confessing love?” Sungmin asked looking at Kyuhyun carefully.
“He said—”
“Han Geng-ge!” Zhou Mi shouted startling everyone as he flung himself at Hankyung.
“Mi?” Hankyung asked pulling away to look at Zhou Mi.
Kyuhyun rolled his eyes at the affectionate reunion taking place right beside him. He heard Henry translating for Sungmin and he smiled. As long as Sungmin knew it was fine. And as long as Henry knew who Sungmin belonged to then that was fine too.
“That better be a freakishly tall girl you’re holding onto like that.”
Kyuhyun groaned. Why Heechul? Why now? Then again, Heechul wasn’t directing anything at him. It was Hankyung who was in trouble. Kyuhyun turned eagerly to the scene that was about to unfold.
“Heechul.” Hankyung said too happy to care. “This is Zhou Mi. He’s my best friend.”
“I thought I was your best friend.” Yesung said coming over with Siwon.
Kyuhyun frowned. There were too many of them. He was starting to confuse people.
“You are my best friend Yesung. But, this is Zhou Mi, my childhood friend from China. Mi, this Yesung, my best friend. That’s Siwon, his…boyfriend I guess, once I wrap my head around that. That’s Kyuhyun, but you know that well already.”
Kyuhyun frowned. So Zhou Mi had told Hankyung about them.
“That’s Sungmin, Kyuhyun’s new interest in life.”
Kyuhyun flinched. Sure, he supposed that was one way to phrase what he felt for Sungmin, but Hankyung didn’t need to voice it out loud now, not when Sungmin thought he was leaving him for Zhou Mi.
“Oh look there’s Hankyung hyung.” Eunhyuk called as he pulled Donghae along.
“Oh look there’s Zhou Mi.” Donghae said.
“And those two are Eunhyuk and Donghae. Eunhyuk is my son, don’t mess with him.” Hankyung continued. “You won’t remember any of this, so it’s okay. It’ll take a while. This is Heechul, the love of my life unfortunately. And that’s…actually you know, I don’t know who that is.”
Kyuhyun sighed. “That’s Henry from Canada, Sungmin’s new interest in life.”
He watched Sungmin’s frown, but ignored it.
“Henry?” Hankyung asked letting go of Zhou Mi as he walked over to Henry. “But, he’s so cute. Hello. I’m Han Geng, nice to meet you.”
“You’re not Han Geng. You’re Hankyung.” Heechul said obviously annoyed at being ignored.
“Nice to meet you too Han Geng-ge.” Henry said bowing.
Kyuhyun watched as both Yesung and Hankyung went over to Henry. He smiled pleasantly at Sungmin as Hankyung and Yesung dragged Henry away. He laughed at Heechul’s face and then at Zhou Mi who looked like he’d had his favorite toy taken away.
